Take some “me time”

“Happiness is the consequence of personal effort. You fight for it, strive for it, insist upon it, and sometimes even travel around the world looking for it. You have to participate relentlessly in the manifestations of your own blessings. And once you have achieved a state of happiness, you must never become lax about maintaining it. You must make a mighty effort to keep swimming upward into that happiness forever, to stay afloat on top of it.” ― Elizabeth Gilbert, Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman’s Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia

Do something every day that makes you happy. We get so stuck in our routines; gotta get the kids to school, go to work, pick kids up, come home, make dinner, prepare for the next day. Repeat each day. Without actively making sure that I do something for myself, something that makes me smile, I can easily get stuck in my routine. I don’t know about y’all but when I neglect to do something for me I get to that burn out stage pretty quick.

The thing I choose to do each day varies greatly. I mean, to help you understand how my mind works, my bathroom has been overrun with junk and the counters were cluttered and it annoyed me but I just never seemed to have the time to take care of it. So as soon as I got home from work on Friday evening, I knocked out cleaning and reorganizing the bathroom. It genuinely made me smile. It was a chore but it was the thing I did for myself that made me happy. Today, I finally planted an herb garden that has been sitting on my counter for a few weeks. It came with the dirt pucks that had to sit in water for a bit so I just did that in between my laundry shuffle. Definitely made the laundry seem like less of a chore. Have I ever mentioned my complete hatred for laundry? It is not my thing.

The photos seem super dark on here but there isn’t much to see but the dirt at this point. I am excited to have some fresh herbs to cook with. I wanted to fill my outdoor planters but with Texas weather I am not sure that it is time to do so yet.

Anyway, some days my “me thing” is something as simple as listening to an audio book or reading a book. I have a stack of books on my dresser just waiting to be read. There are days when a nap is my me thing. You have to do one thing every day for yourself, no matter how simple or complex it can be. My kids definitely like the charged version of me much better than the run down and exhausted version. As they say, you can’t pour from an empty cup.

Gotta get back to preparing for the week. Thanks for reading. Remember to take some me time today and every day.
